You can call him Mayor Bing. Former NBA star and Detroit businessman, Dave Bing, 65, becomes Detroit’s third mayor in eight months, according to the Detroit Free Press. He’s never run for any office before or dealt with government processes and is somewhat a political novice in many respects. But it was his business background that won him over with the city defeating incumbent and fellow Democrat Ken Cockrel Jr. in a special runoff election, 52.3 percent to 47.7 percent.
Bing will serve out the remainder of former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s second term, but will have to run again in a regular primary election on August 4 and win the November 3 general election.–WLW
