After all the rioting and protests, the people of Oakland may be relieved by this morning’s news. Former transit officer Johannes Mehserle was taken into custody in Nevada on suspicion of murder after a warrant was issued in Calfornia for his arrest, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Mehserle is accused in the News Year’s Day shooting of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old unarmed Black man who had been traveling on an Oakland BART train. The shooting has been viewed by thousands on the Internet after the incident was recorded by bystanders on their cell phones. Witnesses captured Mehserle shooting Grant in the back, once he was face down on the train platform. The incident has caused both peaceful protests and violent riots throughout the city, forcing Mehserle to flee to Nevada for his safety after he received numerous death threats. Another protest is scheduled for 4 p.m. today outside Oakland City Hall.
