Oakland Transit Cop Shoots Black Man in the Back

Twenty-two year old Oscar Grant didn’t realize when he boarded a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train in Oakland that it would be his last. Grant was fatally shot in the back by a transit agency police officer early New Year's Day, according to the Associated Press. Officers suspected him as part of a brawl on the train and admit that the gun went off as he was being restrained. Now, the officer involved in the shooting is said to have received numerous death threats to him and his family, causing him to have to move at least twice in the last few days.

An attorney for the Grant family has filed a $25 million lawsuit against the BART agency and is seeking criminal charges against the officer. Most recently, bystanders have come forward who used their cell phones to record the shooting.
