Growing Gap Between Black and White Women Dying From Breast Cancer

Comments

While the death rates for White breast cancer patients in Chicago seem to have improved over the years, Black women seem to not be as fortunate. In fact, Black women are dying at 116 percent higher rate than White women, according to information released by The Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force, which added that the gap has widened considerably. The group examined data through 2003 and found a 68 percent death rate for Black women over White women. Experts say genetics and or biology alone can’t explain the difference in numbers. The task force discovered that Black women are less likely to get mammograms, and when they do, the mammograms are more likely to be of inferior quality. Also, those diagnosed with cancer are less likely to have access to adequate treatment.
