UPDATE: 8/17/09: Troy Davis family received a touch of good news today. The Supreme Court announced that it will delay the Georgia inmate’s execution and give him another chance to prove his innocence, according to CNN.com. Davis has claimed from the beginning that he was not responsible for the 1989 slaying of Officer Mark MacPhail. Witnesses have said they saw Davis harassing a homeless man in a Burger King restaurant parking lot when the off-duty officer arrived to help the man. Several of those witnesses have since recanted their testimony.
Davis was scheduled to be executed last fall before the Supreme Court granted him a stay, two hours before he was to be killed. A month later justices reversed the decision but again it was halted after the federal courts.-WLW

Barely two hours before his scheduled execution, the Supreme Court granted Troy Davis a stay of execution on Tuesday afternoon. This is the second time the convicted cop killer has been reprieved, giving hope to prove his innocence. Davis was convicted of killing Mark MacPhail, a Savannah, Georgia, police officer, in 1989. The off-duty cop, who was working as a security guard at a bus station was shot twice after coming to the aid of a homeless man who had been pistol-whipped. Annelie Reaves, MacPhail’s sister, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that they’ll be ready when the execution is rescheduled. “It should have happened today,” she said, “but justice will be served.” Davis anticipated a new trial after the majority of the nine witnesses revoked their testimony. The prisoner has received an outpour of backing from supporters, including activist Reverend Al Sharpton. The high court is scheduled to decide on Monday whether or not it will take his case. Otherwise, Davis will once again be scheduled to die by lethal injection.-Porsche Slocum
